This year we’ve gone all out in the Austin office to really get into the spirit of Halloween. We had a hilarious fashion parade (in the video above) with great prizes, but it all started when we decided to deck out the office, complete with skeletons, spider webs and blood:

You can watch the fashion parade hilarities in the video above, but here are some of our best costumes:

You can see all of the photos on Facebook. If a fun company culture is important to you and you’re passionate about a career with the fastest growing e-commerce platform in the world then make sure you take a look at our careers page – we’re always hiring.

Holy Smokes, We’re the #3 Fastest Growing Company in Austin!

Published on October 22nd, 2010 by Mitchell Harper

Last night two of our fearless leaders (Richard, our support manager and Steve, our HR/recruitment manager, both pictured in the immediate photo above) donned their finest suites and headed to the Westin hotel at The Domain here in Austin, Texas for the Austin Business Journal’s annual Fast50 awards ceremony.

We were all secretly hoping to rank in the top 20, so when we got word that we ranked number 3 we were over the moon. All of this hard work is paying off and is being noticed which is great for us as a continued fast growth company (we’ve grown 480% in the last 3 years and recently ranked as the 44th fastest growing software company on the Inc 5000 list for 2010).

Of course we’re nothing without our team of committed, focused, passionate staff, so a huge thank you to all of our amazing guys and gals – both here in Austin and in Sydney. Also a huge thank you to our clients (over 50,000 company-wide and over 8,000 for BigCommerce) – we appreciate that you put your trust in us and choose to power your businesses using our software.

To infinity and beyond!

Here Are the (Almost) 100 New Features & Enhancements Rolling Out to BigCommerce, Starting Today…

Published on October 20th, 2010 by Chris Iona

Bloggers and media: You can find our copy-and-paste press release here.

As you may already know, we’re right in the middle of redeveloping our variations system, which has kept most of our engineers very busy. However, we strongly believe in the spirit of continuous improvement, so we’ve made time to give the current version some TLC.

We’ve just begun the rollout of the new BigCommerce update, which contains almost 100 new features, enhancements and bug fixes, some of which I’ll discuss below. You can opt-in to the new release from your control panel over the next few days and your store will be upgraded automatically.

Let’s take a look at the new features in this release…

Free Shipping Coupon Code

You can now choose to offer free or discounted shipping when creating a coupon code. Combine this with the coupon usage limitations below and you’ve got a great way to entice shoppers to buy from you. This was actually our most-requested feature!

Limit Coupon Usage By Location And/Or Shipping Method

One of the more powerful features we’ve added to this release is the ability to limit coupon code usage based on customer location and/or the shipping method selected. The new “Advanced” tab on the “Create a Coupon Code” screen lets you configure these options:

Limiting the use of a coupon code by location

Limiting the use of a coupon by shipping method

Limit Usage of Coupon Codes Per Customer

A simple feature but a good one – you can limit the number of times an individual customer can use a coupon code:

Customize Number of Product Breadcrumbs Displayed

Another simple feature, but one that was highly requested. You can now choose to show all/none/one product breadcrumb on your product pages.

Choose Where to Show Free Shipping Eligibility

If you have a discount rule setup for free shipping then you can entice customers to spend a little more to qualify. You can choose the exact message to show as well as where to show the message in your store:

Configuring the free shipping enticement message and placement

How the free shipping enticement message appears on the cart page

Post Import Review

It sounds impressive, but it’s really quite simple. We’ve added a link to the last step of product importing, which allows you to review the changes you just made. We’ve also improved the error messages that are returned if your import was unsuccessful.

InstantAddTM Suggestive Cart Upsell System

We know you want customers to stay on your website as long as possible, to improve the likelihood of them purchasing something. You also told us that you want them to stay on the same page when they buy things. Well now with the InstantAddTM suggestive cart upsell system, they can. You can click on the image below to see an example of adding a product to the cart.

Category Flyout Menus

A new feature for BigCommerce is category fly out menus, which are ready for your customization. They expand when you mouse over a category, presenting sub categories to your users. To enable them, login to your Control Panel -> Settings -> Store Settings -> Display (tab), and scroll down to Category Settings.

Customizable Gift Certificates

You asked for it, so here it is! Our gift certificates now allow you to change the color, font, layout and overall look of the template, so you can give them the same personalized touch you gave to your store.

Ability to Archive Orders

Like the trash can on your computer, there’s now an option to archive orders when deleted so that they can be restored if you need them. Believe me when I say that this nifty improvement can save you and us lots of time!

Performance Improvements

We’ve manage to squeeze out some serious performance improvements in product importing (especially those with complex and large data sets). We’ve also introduced some code to help BigCommerce operate under even less load, which is a good thing all round.

Here are the results of a complex test case we just ran:-

Importing 1,114 complex products
> Old: 26 minutes 14 seconds
> New: 38 seconds

… as you can see, this test case is over 40 times faster!

Integration Improvements

In this build of BigCommerce, we have numerous fixes to 3rd party integrations, including Facebook, PayPal, eBay, FedEx, GoogleCheckout, eWay and QuickBooks. As their API’s improve, so do our interconnects. There’s also lots of little UI & security tweaks and improvements.

I look forward to hearing your feedback in the comments section below. For those that would like to review the release notes, you can click here.

[Video] The Magic Conversion Rate Formula

Published on October 20th, 2010 by Mitchell Harper

In this video I share my “Sales to Content” ratio which, if used correctly, can have a dramatic impact on the conversion rate of your online store.

The basic premise is simple: for every “sales” page on your website, you need to have at least two pieces of content that help establish trust, credibility and respect with your potential customers. Watch the video to learn which particular types of content work best.

How Watching TV Helps Improve Our Customer Support

Published on October 19th, 2010 by richardlong

A live stream of our call queue which helps us answer calls faster

About two weeks ago our technical support team became a little “higher tech” – we mounted a TV screen on the wall in our Austin office to monitor inbound call activity. The TV screen lists all inbound calls that are on hold and color codes them by the length of time each client has been waiting. The calls are coded green for zero to three minutes, yellow for three to five minutes, and red for five minutes or longer.

You might wonder what we did before the TV and why it’s a significant change for us. Well, before the TV was installed we utilized the call monitoring client software that came with our phone system and installed it on all of the Windows computers used by our sales samurais and support ninjas. However, because some of our team members run Mac or Linux as their desktop, they weren’t able to install the monitoring software.

For those who could use it, the monitoring software would often get stuck running in the background behind other windows and it wasn’t as fluid as I wanted it to be, so adding a TV on the wall that shows our call queues was almost a “no brainer” – why didn’t we think of this before?!

This visibility has really brought about some nice changes and habits with our support ninjas.

In the two weeks since we installed the TV, we’ve seen an almost instant drop in the average length of time to answer calls. In the two weeks prior to the TV and now two weeks after, we have seen the average length of time to answer a call drop by almost three minutes. That’s three minutes of your life you get back by not having to “enjoy” our hold music.

Now I can’t always promise you a zero minute wait when you call us, especially during our peak periods, but you’ll probably notice if you’ve called in a few times recently that hold time is getting significantly shorter. In terms of color coding, our calls are averaging in the yellow zone but we’re working very, very hard get them the green zone (i.e. a zero to three minute wait, closer to zero than to three minutes of course).

I’ll keep you posted on our progress over the coming weeks and months.

Podcast #8: How to Improve Your Google AdWords Click Thru Rate By At Least 25%

Published on October 14th, 2010 by Mitchell Harper

Length: 12:25

Overview: Today I share a simple strategy which you can use to improve your Google AdWords click thru rate by at least 25% and possibly by up to 300% or more depending on how they’re performing now.

Description: In this, episode 8 of my podcast, I’ll show you how you can get predictable improvements to the click thru of your Google AdWords ads – without spending more money (possibly while spending less) and without being a Google AdWords guru. If you implement this strategy I’m confident you’ll reduce your SEM spend and increase your click thru rate, thus getting more visitors to your website for less money, effectively reducing your average cost per click (CPC) at the same time.
