Bloggers and media: You can find our copy-and-paste press release here.

As you may already know, we’re right in the middle of redeveloping our variations system, which has kept most of our engineers very busy. However, we strongly believe in the spirit of continuous improvement, so we’ve made time to give the current version some TLC.

We’ve just begun the rollout of the new BigCommerce update, which contains almost 100 new features, enhancements and bug fixes, some of which I’ll discuss below. You can opt-in to the new release from your control panel over the next few days and your store will be upgraded automatically.

Let’s take a look at the new features in this release…

Free Shipping Coupon Code

You can now choose to offer free or discounted shipping when creating a coupon code. Combine this with the coupon usage limitations below and you’ve got a great way to entice shoppers to buy from you. This was actually our most-requested feature!

Limit Coupon Usage By Location And/Or Shipping Method

One of the more powerful features we’ve added to this release is the ability to limit coupon code usage based on customer location and/or the shipping method selected. The new “Advanced” tab on the “Create a Coupon Code” screen lets you configure these options:

Limiting the use of a coupon code by location

Limiting the use of a coupon by shipping method

Limit Usage of Coupon Codes Per Customer

A simple feature but a good one – you can limit the number of times an individual customer can use a coupon code:

Customize Number of Product Breadcrumbs Displayed

Another simple feature, but one that was highly requested. You can now choose to show all/none/one product breadcrumb on your product pages.

Choose Where to Show Free Shipping Eligibility

If you have a discount rule setup for free shipping then you can entice customers to spend a little more to qualify. You can choose the exact message to show as well as where to show the message in your store:

Configuring the free shipping enticement message and placement

How the free shipping enticement message appears on the cart page

Post Import Review

It sounds impressive, but it’s really quite simple. We’ve added a link to the last step of product importing, which allows you to review the changes you just made. We’ve also improved the error messages that are returned if your import was unsuccessful.

InstantAddTM Suggestive Cart Upsell System

We know you want customers to stay on your website as long as possible, to improve the likelihood of them purchasing something. You also told us that you want them to stay on the same page when they buy things. Well now with the InstantAddTM suggestive cart upsell system, they can. You can click on the image below to see an example of adding a product to the cart.

Category Flyout Menus

A new feature for BigCommerce is category fly out menus, which are ready for your customization. They expand when you mouse over a category, presenting sub categories to your users. To enable them, login to your Control Panel -> Settings -> Store Settings -> Display (tab), and scroll down to Category Settings.

Customizable Gift Certificates

You asked for it, so here it is! Our gift certificates now allow you to change the color, font, layout and overall look of the template, so you can give them the same personalized touch you gave to your store.

Ability to Archive Orders

Like the trash can on your computer, there’s now an option to archive orders when deleted so that they can be restored if you need them. Believe me when I say that this nifty improvement can save you and us lots of time!

Performance Improvements

We’ve manage to squeeze out some serious performance improvements in product importing (especially those with complex and large data sets). We’ve also introduced some code to help BigCommerce operate under even less load, which is a good thing all round.

Here are the results of a complex test case we just ran:-

Importing 1,114 complex products
> Old: 26 minutes 14 seconds
> New: 38 seconds

… as you can see, this test case is over 40 times faster!

Integration Improvements

In this build of BigCommerce, we have numerous fixes to 3rd party integrations, including Facebook, PayPal, eBay, FedEx, GoogleCheckout, eWay and QuickBooks. As their API’s improve, so do our interconnects. There’s also lots of little UI & security tweaks and improvements.

I look forward to hearing your feedback in the comments section below. For those that would like to review the release notes, you can click here.

    Excellent. Can’t wait!

One question about the enticement message for free shipping (love the concept!). This phrase threw me: “if you have a discount rules setup for free shipping”

All my products use variations. Therefore, as it currently stands, I cannot use any discount rules.

Does this mean I can’t use the enticement system either?

    [Reply]

    Mitchell Harper Reply:

Hi Dawn. It does, unfortunately. But our new options system will include the ability to use discount rules on products with options (variations). We’re working HARD on it so we appreciate your patience. I promise it will be worth the wait.

Regarding this checkbox for scheduling the upgrade:

What kind of customizations do we have to re-do?

    Thanks,

    Scott

    [Reply]

    Chris Iona Reply:

    Hi Scott,

The answer is very likely “nothing” – and whilst we make every effort to preserve existing customizations during the upgrade process, there is always a chance that we’ve missed something (hence the message you see). But the upgrade process has been architected in such a way that it minimizes that risk.

    Just in time. Nice work.
Here are my sought after changes for the next version.
    - allow copy/paste of categories & products
    - have customer store credit automatically deduct on manual payments
    - When doing ‘Add Manual Product’ , have the item/SKU permanently added to the “product catalog”. (even though not titled or categorized). This could be done later, but is helpful when needing to reference again. It would also be is the Search/history.
    Thanks

    [Reply]

    Chris Iona Reply:

    Hi Keith,

Thanks – there some good thoughts here. As a FYI, you can currently copy/paste products using the ‘copy’ link to the right of the product, when in “View Products”.

    Keith (October 21st, 2010, 6:54 pm)

Hi Keith, Supplier management isn’t really something that is core to BigCommerce at this point – but I’ll keep it in mind when we finish the new product options system.

    Hi Mitch,

Just a question on the eBay integration. Has there been any thought put into the no of days a listing can appear on eBay. We have an eBay shop with the ability to have an item there with a ‘Good until Cancelled’ flag which automatically rolls the item for another 28 days. With the integration at the moment, we can only select 3,5 or 10 days amd have to relist after the selected period is lapsed to select the ‘Good Until Cancelled’ option.

    Regards

Sounds like a great upgrade – Im worried that theres any possibility that after installing the update other things wont work or might mess everything up. Is there a chance of that, because after spending tons of time setting up our new site theres no way I want to risk killing it.

    [Reply]

    Chris Iona Reply:

    Hi Lin,

Like any software update, there is always a change for regression in functionality. We have spent a large chunk of the past fortnight going through this update and verifying each change, in an effort to minimize that risk. We’re also in the process of hiring a senior web application tester to build out our quality assurance capability even further. But with that said, if something does go wrong you do have the help of our support team :)

    hi
    thanks for the upgrade.
any change we could have a “holiday mode” in one of the future upgrades?

For small shops just being able to put the shop to holiday mode would mean that customers know that stock will not be shipped before a certain date etc etc.

also maybe further define holiday mode in that you could set some items in holiday mode, and other not, those that are shipped by other people. you get my drift I am sure.

    thanks

    Leslie

    [Reply]

    Mitchell Harper Reply:

Hi Leslie. You can accomplish that right now. The best way would be to go to Marketing -> Promotional Banners and create a banner on your home page that talks about your shipping dates, etc. You could also just create a page called “Holiday Shipping” or even add a form field under Tools -> Form Field that shows dates. Hope that helps.

Great! Now please, please, please develop your own API to a useful level (ie full REST CRUD on all resources eg. products, customers, orders etc like Shopify) so we can develop systems, apps etc to integrate with you. I’m sold (in theory) on BigCommerce for one of my projects, but can’t use it for this single reason. I hope you are just holding back while redoing your variants because the API will have to follow how that turns out.
Lots of people agree with me : http://community.bigcommerce.com/bigcommerce/topics/more_useful_api_features
This is a mega-feature that would make lots of things possible, and enable the ecosystem to develop faster than your company can on its own. Please don’t treat it as yet another nice-to-have on the list.

Why aren’t we able to have a rotating banner on the home page?
This should be simple as the page changes when its refreshed – but it should change automatically and give the user the option to flick between pages – see example @ http://www.kiddicare.com

Hi Darren. When creating a banner you can add any HTML or content you like using the WYSIWYG editor. We don’t have a built-in banner rotator but there are dozens of jQuery plugins you can use with some basic HTML/JavaScript knowledge as many of our clients have done. Hope that helps.

Hi Justin. Yes there are. The upgrade automatically patches your template files and adds in new changes. On the rare occasion that your template can’t be upgraded automatically, you will be shown exactly why and can make simple HTML changes from your control panel to implement the changes that couldn’t be applied. This is in rare situations where a template has been customized beyond recognition.

You are showing up as the class of the e-commerce space, while my host flounders about with bug fixes, minor tweaks and (in my opinion) woefully underdeveloped features. - Multi-tiered subscription options for each product (i.e. 1 year subscription = $20/month, 2 year subscription = $15/month, etc.)

    - Prepayment discount option as a percentage or dollar amount (i.e. pay 1 year up front save 10%)

    - Subscription options available as individual add ons during product selection and adding to cart and once in cart as well (i.e. add $5/month for insurance, $10/month if you want global roaming, etc.)

    Thanks

For coupons that Limit number of uses per customer, how do you enforce that? Do you require a customer to create an account and log in before being able to checkout?

Hi Nathan. There are a few ways. We look at IP address, cookies and yes the account used to purchase. It’s hard to enforce 100% of the time for guest orders but we have all bases covered as best as we can.

Hi, The InstantAddTM Suggestive Cart Upsell System has stopped working on my store. Everything is selected in the settings so it sohuld be active. Any ideas why it isn’t working?

    Thanks.
