Dealing with sales tax is one of the least enjoyable parts of running an online business. Sales tax rules are complex and ever-changing, particularly in the U.S., which can make compliance extremely time consuming for brands.
Today, we’re releasing a feature that will change all of that for merchants on Bigcommerce.
Avalara AvaTax enables you to instantly and accurately calculate sales tax at the time of checkout. The new features we’re releasing today will automatically assign hundreds of thousands of taxability rules and the latest tax jurisdiction boundaries to apply the right tax rate for each customer. Even if you sell products with special tax rules, you can be sure that you’re accurately calculating and reporting sales tax when you use this service.

Bigcommerce chose to partner with Avalara because they are the clear leader when it comes to sales tax calculation and are already used by thousands of merchants around the world. In fact, many of our own merchants are already Avalara customers, and we’re excited to offer this deep integration to all of our clients through the Bigcommerce Control Panel.
What exactly will you get by using Avalara’s AvaTax? We explain in detail below, but it all comes down to this one necessary advantage: convenient compliance and calculations.
Product-Level Sales Tax Calculation
Many of the products Bigcommerce merchants sell have special sales tax rules in different jurisdictions. For example, did you know that apparel is taxed differently in New York depending on whether it’s priced above or below $110? There are thousands of these unique tax rules in cities and states across the U.S., and keeping track of all of them is nearly impossible.
When customers check out, merchants can automatically calculate the correct sales tax for every product in the order.
With this new AvaTax integration, Bigcommerce merchants will be able to use UPCs or custom tax codes in order to identify tax categories for all of the products in their catalog. That means that when customers check out, merchants can automatically calculate the correct sales tax for every product in the order.
Tax Exemption Support
In addition to calculating sales tax automatically, merchants will also be able to process orders for tax exempt customers including resellers or government entities. Define specific tax exempt categories for any of your customers, and they won’t have to pay tax when they check out.
Your customers’ addresses will automatically be matched against the USPS database to ensure that they’re formatted correctly. This will help calculate accurate sales tax, and you get the added benefit of knowing your shipments are headed to the right destination.
All of these features are available today for any Bigcommerce merchant with an Avalara AvaTax account.
