The Kidstuff success story

The origins of the Kidstuff brand go all the way back to 1969, when the company’s presence consisted of two toy stores in Woollahra and Mosman, two of Sydney’s vast suburban areas.

Today, it’s a thriving business selling both educational and classic toys for children, boasting more than 55 stores in five states, plus a growing ecommerce business.

Scaling up has happened quickly as 25 retail locations were added last year alone.

As the company expanded its physical footprint, the Kidstuff team began thinking about way they could improve the online portion of the business, too.

After an exhaustive review of ecommerce platforms, Kidstuff decided to move to BigCommerce.

Switching from Magento to BigCommerce

As told to BigCommerce by Myles Fleming, Business Manager - Operations, IT, and Marketing, Kidstuff.com.au

We’d been using Magento for a while, but our solution was basically cobbled together code that had been patched up to keep it functional.

After a while, we reached the limits of its functionality and we couldn’t make any more future improvements without breaking something else.

41% of our customers use PayPal to make purchases online, so when we learned our Magento installation would no longer work with PayPal, that was the final straw –– we knew we had to move.

We looked at staying on Magento with a complete rebuild of the platform, but we ultimately decided not to because of the significant cost, build time and ongoing challenges with supporting it.

We didn’t want to build an entirely new ecommerce platform and still be bogged down with IT support tickets.

During the process of researching ecommerce platform alternatives, we met with the BigCommerce team and loved that we got face time with real human beings there who understood our business goals. That’s when we realized BigCommerce would be a much better option for us.

A foundation for growth without the complexity

As told to BigCommerce by Myles Fleming, Business Manager - Operations, IT, and Marketing, Kidstuff.com.au

Because many of our products are large and bulky, online sales have always been a challenge for us. The margins are small, and the large cubes required to ship products add to our costs.

Plus, the logistics of overseeing and managing resources across both retail and online can sometimes be difficult.

Our main priority was growing our online business profitably. We were deciding between Shopify and BigCommerce as our new ecommerce platform solution.

The deciding factor was when we commissioned Randem Media –– our preferred agency to build out the site –– and were convinced to move forward with BigCommerce due to its presence in Australia and the level of complexity and customization the platform allows.

So far, it’s been a fantastic foundation for these efforts, and integrations within the platform help simplify the logistical challenges of the past.

Accelerating migration with open APIs

As told to BigCommerce by Myles Fleming, Business Manager - Operations, IT, and Marketing, Kidstuff.com.au

We were able to migrate to BigCommerce within 7 weeks, and that was completely gobsmacking to us. It was so fast.

We launched with the minimum viable product in that short window, and are now in phases 2 and 3 of improvements to the site.

Thanks to the platform’s open API, we’re building out more customizations that are making our online store even more effective as a sales tool, both on the front and back ends.

Integrations for better business - including Microsoft Navision sync

As told to BigCommerce by Myles Fleming, Business Manager - Operations, IT, and Marketing, Kidstuff.com.au

Integrations with different tools have made our online operation much more effective and efficient.

BigCommerce integrates seamlessly with PayPal and in addition, we can now use integrations like ShippIt for shipping and delivery tracking, StoreMapper to show locations of our different retail stores, and zipPay to let shoppers pay later.

For our ERP, we’ve integrated Microsoft Navision –– and it allows us to switch inventory feeds easily, which is important for us during the holidays.

It’s producing results, too this year, we sold $200,000+ in one day during a holiday promotion.

Delivering omnichannel excellence with an assist from Randem Media

As told to BigCommerce by Myles Fleming, Business Manager - Operations, IT, and Marketing, Kidstuff.com.au

With BigCommerce, the platform just works. The support team is willing and ready to answer any questions quickly.

We scaled from 15 orders a day to 1,400 in seven hours on BigCommerce. And the platform performed exactly the same from one to the other. We didn't have to do planning conferences and put in new servers and all the rest of it. The platform just works.

We haven't had any downtime at all. The back end is easy to use. Almost everything takes five minutes or less to do.

BigCommerce isn’t flashy –– it just does what it says it will, which is absolutely everything we need.

And with Randem, they took the time to listen to what we really wanted. We had very specific objectives we wanted to achieve, and the Randem team worked with BigCommerce to get us 80% of the way there on the first launch.

And now, we’re building out increased personalization and customization using BigCommerce’s APIs, and Randem is there to implement everything we want at every step of the way.
