The Spearmint Love Success Story

Spearmint Love started after well-known blogger and infant clothing and accessories expert Shari Lott decided to create a new take on the cross blanket when shopping for the perfect accent for her daughter’s room. She was frustrated by the choices available and thought that she could design the blanket precisely the way she wanted it should look.

In September of 2013, she launched Spearmintlove.com using a free trial from BigCommerce and the blanket she designed as her first product. She sold her first blanket a week later and she has been growing rapidly ever since.

From the first few blanket designs, Spearmint Love has become one of the fastest growing e-tailers with more than 3,000 products and a growing audience for their highly curated product offering.

But that’s not his most impressive feat.

John used the flexible BigCommerce API to build a custom solution that not only greatly improved his revenues, but that he spun off as a standalone company that can now be found in the BigCommerce App Store.

Choosing BigCommerce over Shopify

We looked at Shopify and BigCommerce. We liked the pricing of BigCommerce. We liked the ease of use. We picked BigCommerce and the rest is history in terms of our relationship with you guys. We’ve grown with you. You’ve continued to add features and functionality.

I have a lot of small businesses that follow me and a lot of friends in the small business community. I think most of them are on Shopify, but we’ve been on BigCommerce from the beginning — and it’s been super effective.

Ease of scalability

We opened shop with BigCommerce in September of 2013. That was just the beginning. I do remember signing up with BigCommerce. I got a free two-week trial. I spent time figuring out code and to be honest, with you since the day that it launched, it really hasn’t changed.

We still have that standard template you guys gave away for free. I’m proud that we’ve been able to grow this big with something BigCommerce gave us for free. It’s cool!

We really have spent most of our time growing the product side and not investing time on the development side. I think that’s a really, really important point because we have zero developers.

We’ve done all this by leveraging every tool BigCommerce has given us. There is rarely a product or tool that BigCommerce launches that I don’t test or try in some way.

For instance, the integration between BigCommerce and Facebook was super easy.

We don’t want to use a 3PL. I have been doing this for 25 years. I was the head of accounting for a $23B dollar hedge fund before this. I’m telling you right now, there is no way a 3PL can deliver a lower cost than what we could deliver here in Scottsdale, Arizona.

If you look at our revenue per square foot, I challenge you to find an ecommerce company anywhere that’s doing more revenue per square foot than us.

We get nervous about the holidays in the sense that we’re up 1100% percent YoY. Holiday tends to be 2 to 3x what we’re doing.

Being able to handle and scale all those orders is the nice thing about being on BigCommerce. We don't have to worry about traffic or checkout because BigCommerce scales. No matter how high demand goes up, you’re able to do it.


Selling more than major retailers

About three months ago, the CEO of one of the brands we sell flew down because he wanted to come and see how we were selling more of his brand than Amazon, Diapers.com, Buy Buy Baby, Anthropologie and other major retailers in pure volume.
