The Spectrum Audio Success Story

John McCann, a serial ecommerce entrepreneur, bought Spectrum Audio in early 2014 because he saw opportunity — and opportunity cost.

Though the brand had developed a reputation in the professional audio industry for delivering top-quality products, they were bogged down by bloated expenses and inefficient technology.

Fast forward more than two years and Spectrum Audio has grown tremendously — including doubling revenue in their first year on BigCommerce.

But that’s not his most impressive feat.

John used the flexible BigCommerce API to build a custom solution that not only greatly improved his revenues, but that he spun off as a standalone company that can now be found in the BigCommerce App Store.

It’s pretty simple: the powerful features and consistent revenue growth I’ve seen on the platform — that's what has kept me so loyal to BigCommerce. John McCann, CEO

Double revenue by switching to BigCommerce

As told to BigCommerce by John McCann, CEO of Spectrum Audio.

Two of my other stores were Magento stores. I used to be really big into Magento when it came out. We're talking years ago, before BigCommerce even existed.

Then, I moved those two stores from Magento over to BigCommerce and without any other major changes doubled my revenue year-over-year on both sites.

Plus, we went with a BigCommerce Enterprise option, which is a fraction of what we were paying with Magento and one-tenth of the headache.

Our Magento development nightmare

As told to BigCommerce by John McCann, CEO of Spectrum Audio.

When I first bought Spectrum Audio, it was on Magento and I was literally paying developers every couple of days to fix something.

Our overhead on Magento was more than $2,000 a month alone, just between server costs and paying developers. And the sales weren't near where they are today.

To be a successful store owner, I can't afford to have this huge team of developers that know everything. You can have someone on the inside for small fixes, but really we can't be an ecommerce platform on top of being an online store.

BigCommerce lets you focus on business growth

As told to BigCommerce by John McCann, CEO of Spectrum Audio.

It's all about focusing on the right things.

With Magento, I was spending more money, time and energy just trying to keep a store running than I was doing what I'm good at –– which is selling products.

Even if you have the development resources to allocate toward technology, all that time you just spent fixing it and making it work is time you could have spent developing ads, or product content, or developing your employees or improving customer service –– or sleeping!

The doubling of revenue we saw by switching to BigCommerce was just a testament to all these built in SEO features, speed and all the optimizations that BigCommerce has their whole team working on. John McCann, CEO

It’s pretty simple: the powerful features and consistent revenue growth I’ve seen on the platform — that's what has kept me so loyal to BigCommerce. Now I fear if I switch to anything else, is my revenue going to go down 100%?

I almost didn't purchase Spectrum Audio because it wasn't on BigCommerce.

Quite frankly, if you're not capable of making development changes or building features from scratch, you're probably better off with BigCommerce. You're not going to be able to do any of that on an open-source cart like Magento by yourself without spending a bunch of money.

Built-in SEO saves time, generates revenue

There are some built in things that I think people don’t even notice, like automatic URL redirects that are built when you change a product title. Stuff like that –– where the platform just does the work for you –– really adds up.

You can import redirects into BigCommerce. Even if you have a Magento developer who knows how to do that, you’re still paying him to do something that’s built into BigCommerce automatically.

A platform that pays for itself

As told to BigCommerce by John McCann, CEO of Spectrum Audio.

Relative to our sales, the cost of BigCommerce is negligible. The Braintree rates alone can easily pay for what your store costs.

Ease of use improves business operations

As told to BigCommerce by John McCann, CEO of Spectrum Audio.

In my experience selling tens of millions of dollars worth of merchandise, what matters is stability and simplicity.

I can bring in a new customer service rep and start them at 9 am; by 5 pm, I feel comfortable that they can take an order, update a product, check status and put notes on an order — all within the BigCommerce dashboard.

We run multiple stores and so I only have to train them once and I don't have to worry ‘is their login going to crash?’ I don't have that fear that something is going to go wrong or fall apart.

API and Partner Marketplace built for custom growth

As told to BigCommerce by John McCann, CEO of Spectrum Audio.

The only reason we didn’t immediately switch to BigCommerce was the custom-build quoting solution we had on Magento.

Once we moved to BigCommerce, we built a comparable app in three days using their API that allowed customers to request a quote, receive it in their email, and check out at the quoted price.

This simple addition made a tremendous impact on our website — I’d expect a revenue drop of 40% if we turned it off.

It worked so well for us that we knew other ecommerce businesses, especially those selling B2B with big-ticket items, surely need an quoting solution as well.. We called it QuoteNinja and added it to the BigCommerce App Store. Now we have hundreds of customers whose Quote Ninja dashboard get flooded with requests for hundreds of thousands of dollars in quotes.

This is my first software ever. I've built websites and sold stuff online forever, but I've never built software of any kind. All the stuff was there in BigCommerce; the integration with the BigCommerce API was straightforward. The ability to quickly build a custom solution without the complexity of Magento makes a world of difference.

We just implemented the app for a company that has 10 outside sales reps and they're all going to be using Quote Ninja.
