This index of sales data from small and medium-sized online stores in the U.S. is garnered from thousands of Bigcommerce merchants across a range of industries for the quarter spanning October to December 2014. Highlights include a strong holiday shopping season for independent businesses and the continued growth of mobile commerce.

Key Findings

  • Overall, independent online businesses averaged an outstanding 27% year-over-year increase in sales during the Cyber Five shopping weekend.
  • Sales accelerated during the quarter, with per-store totals up more than 34% year over year. In comparison, on a per-store basis YoY sales increased 14% in Q1, 18% in Q2 and 24% in Q3.
  • Consumer electronics ecommerce stores were the biggest winners during Q4, topping the category rankings for gross merchandise volume (GMV) per store and the Bigcommerce Industry Health Index.
