Bigcommerce Teams Up with Paypal to Offer Seamless Checkout Experience on Any Device

According to a Baymard Institute study, 69% of all online shopping carts are abandoned, with one in five resulting from a lack of confidence in the merchant’s ability to handle credit card and other sensitive information. That metric reflects a growing online shopping trend that must be addressed in order for online businesses to truly scale and succeed: the need to maintain consumer trust.

Today, Bigcommerce is proud to announce that we have teamed up with Paypal, one of the most consumer-trusted payment processors in the world.

Via a one-click installation in the Bigcommerce control panel, online store owners can easily improve their checkout experience and reduce abandoned carts, all thanks to the new integration — PayPal, powered by Braintree. Additional features include:

Bigcommerce merchants are the first SMB online retailers to receive access to these features, made possible through PayPal powered by Braintree, a payments service dedicated to online businesses of all sizes and mobile shopping –– which now accounts for nearly 50% of all online purchases.

  • @Tracy Wallace, We’re now in September 2016 and the automated Braintree still hasn’t been rolled out to non-US-sellers. This is having a knock on effect, for example we can’t use the new Facebook checkout without it. Please could you explain to management that it does not do to treat non-US businesses as second class citizens like this.

  • Absolutely! Just turn it off and turn Paypal powered by Braintree on and you should be good to go!

  • I have PayPal Website Payments Pro (Payflow Edition) currently checked. I pay extra every month for PayPal Payments Pro. Can I turn that off and uncheck it and only check PayPal Powered by Braintree?

    Thanks, Tracey! Yeah, we got it all set up now on Rocker Rags – turned off PayPal Express Checkout and are using PayPal Powered by BrainTree exclusively. I’ll keep you posted on how it works out, if you’d like.

  • Hey everyone!! Express Checkout is built right into PayPal powered by Braintree so you get credit card processing as as option as well as the Express Checkout button for PayPal. So, once you have PayPal powered by Braintree up, just turn off the other instance of Express Checkout so that way you don’t have double checkout buttons. :)

  • Great question. We have many different, very high quality payment solutions available to our clients. PayPal powered by Braintree allows you to accept credit/debit cards and PayPal all in, on a single integrated solution. Also, you can manage all of these transactions in one view through the Braintree dashboard.

  • I am still migrating – I saw a post where if I have paypal express enabled on my shopping cart page – they may not get charged shipping/tax etc (my current site I have it on my cart page as an option to checkout with credit card – but it brings them back to my current site and does not calculate the total to be billed until the end – once we enabled it on our cart page our cart conversion rate increased significantly).

    So my question is: can this option be enabled on the cart page (instead of when they get to the billing page only) AND if it can be implemented on the cart page – will it be set up so the shipping fees and taxes are included BEFORE the customer accepts the total to be billing?

    Hi Tracey – great post! We already use PayPal Express. If we use PayPal Powered by Braintree, does that work in conjunction with the PayPal Express that we already have employed on Rocker Rags, or should we use one or the other (PayPal Express vs. PayPal Powered by Braintree)? Is it a group effort, or is it a one or the other kind of scenario?

    Tracey, thanks for the reply. You’ve hit the nail on the head really. I’m frustrated because in the international world of ecommerce many of my competitors ARE US based, and this strategy from Bigcommece gives them a competitive advantage over me. That’s not welcome at all.

  • Hey Gareth, thanks for the comment! I understand the frustration. Unfortunately, with large product pushes like this, its generally best practice to roll it out. We are stoked, though, about opening this new feature up to our international audience, along with both PayPal and Braintree. It is absolutely on the way. International merchants are a huge priority for us, especially considering that selling online often makes many online merchants international sellers, and PayPal’s high trust among consumers is key to ensuring international growth for any online store looking to do so.     This sounds great. Pity that Bigcommerce has chosen to restrict availability of this product (Braintree) to US sellers only, so my store can’t use it. I don’t understand why because Braintree are quite happy to offer their service outside the USA, they actually have a great offer at the moment that I wanted to take advantage of, but can’t, because of this BC policy.

    Sell more, eh?.
