Catalyst comes pre-built with a completely functioning, high-performing composable ecommerce site with Next.js framework that leverages all of the necessary BigCommerce APIs and functionalities, so you can easily integrate with other components that already use Next.js. Catalyst also has Google Lighthouse scores of 100 out of the box.
Yes, you can host Catalyst on any frameworks that supports Next.js. However, we are building and optimizing our process using Vercel at this time.
There are two main differences between BigCommerce's Catalyst and Shopify's Hydrogen. Firstly, Hydrogen operates on the Remix framework, which is proprietary to Shopify, meaning Hydrogen is ideal for brands that want to stay within the Shopify ecosystem. It is not built for scalability, complexity, and discourages companies from being agnostic. Secondly, Catalyst uses Next.js framework, which is not proprietary, therefore opening up access to a large developer community. Catalyst provides a balance of flexibility, scalability, and ease of use — paired with a quick implementation.
