You want to give preferred pricing to all students and educators with a .edu address.
Simply setup a rule to match on .edu addresses and they can be added to an Educator Group that has applicable promotions setup.

Easily create rules to auto assign customers to a group based on their email domain. All new customers' email addresses will evaluated when the account is created. If the email address domain matches a rule, the customer will be added to a specified BigCommerce group.
Monitor rule activations using the Admin Log
All email rule updates are monitored and written to the Admin Log for a complete trail of system changes.
Manage historic customers through the synch functionality
Setup rules and synch your historic customers to add them to the relevant group.
