How the fee works
The Open Payment Provider Fee is a monthly fee charged by BigCommerce for orders processed through Open Payment Providers during the billing period.1 It is calculated on GMV attributed to those providers at the order level and appears as a distinct line item on your monthly BigCommerce invoice.
✅ The fee applies only to orders processed through an Open Payment Provider.
✅ Orders processed through any of the 21 Embedded Payment Providers below are not subject to the fee.
✅ If your business uses a mix of providers, the fee applies only to the GMV attributed to Open Payment Providers.
✅ If your business uses offline orders, that offline GMV counts as Open Payment Provider volume.
✅ The fee is charged to your business by BigCommerce. It must not be passed through to shoppers at checkout.
Compliance note: Payment network rules and local laws restrict shopper-facing surcharges in many jurisdictions. Your business is responsible for its own compliance.

The Open Payment Provider Fee rate is set by your plan.2 Higher plans carry lower rates. The fee applies only to GMV processed through Open Payment Providers.

Orders processed through any of these 21 providers are not subject to the Open Payment Provider Fee, based on current partner classifications. The list may evolve over time. Your business will receive advance notice of any changes.

How to add or switch a payment provider
Switching providers takes real evaluation. Expect two weeks to four months, end to end, depending on the provider, account underwriting, and reconciliation needs. The four-step process includes:

The fee is determined at the order level. Each order is attributed to the provider that processed it. If that provider is an Embedded Payment Provider, that order's GMV is not subject to the fee. If that provider is an Open Payment Provider or an offline order, that order's GMV is subject to the fee. Your invoice reflects the actual mix of orders during the billing period.
The Embedded Payment Provider list may evolve over time. Any changes apply prospectively only, with advance notice to your business. The list reflects current partner classifications.
Most customers take two weeks to four months end to end, depending on the provider, account underwriting, integration complexity, and reconciliation needs. Some businesses decide not to switch because the fee is smaller than the switching cost. Others find switching is worth the effort, especially at higher GMV volumes.
The fee appears as a line item on your monthly BigCommerce invoice labeled "Open Payment Provider Fee." Your account dashboard also shows your current Inclusive GMV and the share attributed to each provider category.
