The Bohemian Trader success story

When Emily Berlach, Founder and Creative Director of Bohemian Traders, found a bespoke  bohemian jacket online, she contacted the store to purchase but it had sold out. With no further plans to restock, Emily set out to find another supplier online –– only to be notified of their minimum order quantity 10 jackets.

With 9 beloved jackets left in her possession, Emily launched a BigCartel store, promoted the jackets on her blog –– The Beetle Shack –– and sold out in 2 hours.

Three years, multiple BigCartel site crashes, a failed Volusion migration, 166% YoY growth on BigCommerce, 500 products, thousands of SKUs and 10,000 customers later –– Bohemian Traders is one of Australia’s most coveted online fashion and apparel brands.

And Emily and her team are only getting started.

With BigCommerce, everything is just very easy to use. It’s intuitive and it’s scalable. David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders

A platform that scales 166% YoY

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

The business started on the BigCartel platform really as a hobby, additional to what Emily was already creating with her blog. As it grew, it became evident we were going to need a more comprehensive platform. The BigCartel site was starting to crash and wasn't providing what we needed with our rapid growth.

We then ended up on Volusion, but it became evident pretty quickly that their system was antiquated and that there were a lot of things that we couldn't do that seemed pretty easy on other platforms like BigCommerce and Shopify.

So we started looking at the differences between BigCommerce and Shopify. We did some investigation and chose to go with BigCommerce based on ease of scalability. We didn’t want to sign up with a platform where we would just have to switch again.

Our goal now is to continue our rapid growth without out running our own headlights, so to speak. Without doubt, it's been incredibly exciting. Since our first of operation, we have grown 166% YoY and undoubtedly part of that growth can be attributed to the switch to BigCommerce. This year we’re looking at another 160% curve, so it's all up and up. It's a very exciting thing to be a part of.

Actionable analytics for data-driven customer segmentation

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

We use BigCommerce analytics quite heavily on a day-to-day basis. In fact, it was a key motivator for us going with BigCommerce over Shopify.

As part of our BigCommerce Enterprise plan, we get access to BigCommerce Insights which makes analyzing our store data and trends easy. We don’t have to pull data out of spreadsheets and sort it to see what is going on. What we can focus on doing instead is pulling the Insights data out into a CSV and tailoring campaigns to target specific customer segments.

Out-of-the-box customer groups to reward quality segments

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

We work very hard to educate our customers on the products we're selling; we believe in the quality and cuts of our garments and stand by the pricing with second to none customer service. Obviously, as a direct retailer, our strongest profitability comes through full retail sales, so we look at our customer segments in BigCommerce Insights to really drive that.

We really want to reward those customers who do pay full price. They get early access to our new collections and first dibs, invites to “Champagne Shopping” nights and the like.

We use BigCommerce’s out-of-the-box customer groups to do that segmented merchandising. It’s critical for our business. As a small player, we don’t want to get stuck in a pricing race to the bottom, so we focus on the areas that we can really drive value for our customers and the business.

Intuit Solutions builds streamlined enhancements

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

BigCommerce’s out-of-the-box one page checkout is really good, but we wanted something more streamlined. We worked with BigCommerce partner Intuit Solutions, which puts a skin over the BigCommerce one page checkout and rearranges all of the information.

Now, there are three columns on the checkout page. There is no scrolling at all. It’s clean and undistracting for the customers. Plus, we can brand it or include up-sells or cross-sells as needed. That's been working very well.

Intuit Solutions also did a Google integration so that once the customer starts typing in their address, the form will auto-fill or give them suggestions, and then just fill in the rest of the page for them. It makes the checkout process flow really well.

Merchandising across a multi-channel environment

We work to display the same messaging and campaigns across Facebook, Instagram, email and our homepage. 94% of our traffic comes from Facebook, Instagram and email alone, so it’s important that those channels work in unison.

We also refresh and re-merchandise the site pretty regularly so that the homepage is getting updated weekly with new visual content. We'll roll out branded stories every 3 weeks. We work to tell a different story often to promote various products and engage customers in various merchandising campaigns.

What people see on the face of the site and what they see on Facebook, Instagram and through email is all targeted around those stories.

Preferred and trusted payment providers no matter where you sell

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

We use PayPal Braintree as our payments solution, which enables us to accept Mastercard and Visa, too. We also offer ZipPay, which is an Australian-based payments credit supplier. ZipPay works a lot like an online wallet, and that’s been working really well for us.

97% of our customer based is Australian, and ZipPay is recognizable to them and integrates easily into BigCommerce.

Thousands of SKUs without a single glitch

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

We have thousands of SKUs. We have about 500 individual products, but each product has various sizes from extra small to 4XL. Every season, we introduce another 100 products –– each with various SKU counts.

The upload process is pretty easy, and BigCommerce handles our high number of SKUs without a single glitch.

One-click (shipping) integrations across the globe

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

For shipping, we use Australia Post, and that works well for us at our stage. We also use an integrated app called StarShipIt, which has a direct integration into BigCommerce. StarShipIt is the conduit between our BigCommerce store and our e-parcel account with Australia Post. For us, it’s all a one-click system. The integration syncs all the data back and forth for us.

BigCommerce’s apps are easily integrated into the platforms and there are tons that can be used with just one-click.  With our previous platforms, you had to use a third-party conduit to get an app to work, which increased costs and just added to the complexity.

Leveraging the BigCommerce Blog to craft a stronger strategy

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

We found an incredible article on the BigCommerce Blog that really reinforced what we’ve been thinking in terms of strategy. We’re focused on revenue multipliers: increasing average order value, increasing frequency of purchase and increasing total number of customers.

That article sketched out the process to success really well. We’ll be implementing a lot of those things within the next 6 to 12 months.

Lessons in organic growth

As told to BigCommerce by David Berlach, CEO of Bohemian Traders.

Our advice for other online sellers is to start slowly and grow organically. Increase your usage of tools as you need them, and not when an outside party tells you that you need them. Understand all of your costs clearly and keep your accounting in order. That way, your cash flow can fund the business as you grow. We use Xero to do that. Also, understand who your core customer base is and work out how to speak directly to them.

Finally, use a platform that doesn’t get in your way. With BigCommerce, everything is just very easy to use. It’s intuitive and it’s scalable. Scalability is a really big thing.
