It’s a cliche story — Tyler “Sully” Sullivan admits — to have to be fired in order to make his side gig a profitable full-time job. But when his unemployment worst fears came true, Sully bit the bullet and built a legacy brand on target to surpass $9 million in the next year.

Turns out, being fired really was the best thing that happened to him.

The second best — switching from Volusion to BigCommerce.



Success wasn’t possible on Volusion

When it actually happens to you, when you're going to be a first-time dad and your responsibilities change, and you’re fired as the person making the most money for your family, I don't think a lot of people truly understand how that feels.

People hear grind and hustle, but you have to be willing to kill it and do whatever it takes.

When I was on Volusion, I was getting 60% of my traffic from mobile and Volusion didn't have a mobile-friendly, responsive option.

I was spending $3,000 to $4,000 with a website developer to maintain my Volusion website and make changes. Just to keep it running. There were so many customers that tried to checkout from mobile and just couldn’t.

At the time, every single order was life or death for me. I felt like I literally was bleeding when someone couldn't check out.

I was just trying to make this business work and when someone can't check out, it's like you're literally taking food from my family’s table.

So, I decided to make the leap to BigCommerce.

Fear of the unknown

Looking back now, I wish I had found BigCommerce first. I just didn't know what the options were.

When I was on Volusion, I thought, “Man, switching over is going to be so much of a hassle.” I was trying just to build clubs and ship product.

I was petrified to switch because I was just beginning to get some sales. I was just beginning to get some traction.

I said, “You know what, I need to take the risk and see if having a website that was responsive would change the game.” It totally did.

I remember when I switched and I was like holding onto my seat, waiting for that first sale to come in on the new platform. I was freaking out, and then I was like, “Oh, OK. We've got some sales. Oh, the conversion rate is up. That's nice!”

I wish I switched sooner. I absolutely would not have broken $1 million on Volusion.

BigCommerce had multiple out-of-the-box theme options that were mobile-responsive. I bought a template for $149.

Honestly, that was a game-changing moment because all of our mobile traffic from social media, could now check out easily.

The conversion rate immediately went up. Mobile time on site went up. Everything went up! When I switched from Volusion, we could only do $400,000 in sales. My first year with BigCommerce, we almost tripled our sales to $1,100,000.



Mobile-friendly checkout built to sell

I hit my stride after making $1.1 million that year. I figured out the power of video and authenticity, beyond a checkout that works. No matter what –– if I was tired, if I was up all night with the baby, if I had too many beers the night before — I put myself on video.

I put a video out there of me in my backyard swinging our product just to demonstrate it, and that video, this sort of Facebook video which was new, got me about a million views.

That was a game-changing moment. And since everyone was coming to the site on mobile, we could convert them because of BigCommerce.

Since then, we now have two fulfillment centers. I have two employees. In 2016, our second year of BigCommerce, we hit $3.76 million in revenue.

It really shows you that if your website works, if you have the right systems in place and if your product is good, you can do anything!



Design and launch — ASAP

It was easy. I bought a template. I made it look like what I thought was acceptable. I got the content I thought we’d need. I did a few 301 redirects and I got it live so I could make sure it looked right.

Then, I had a launch. I said, “Hey, we got a new website!” That was really the moment of truth.

It wasn’t nearly as time consuming as I thought it would be. It took me a couple days.

What is probably the best part about BigCommerce is, one, the checkout doesn’t break. Every change we made on Volusion, just a CSS change or a tweak here or there, the checkout would break and it would drive me insane.

There's no way I could have had the foresight unless all of this happened, to me.

I'm still using BigCommerce to this day, and we're going to do almost $4 million this year. Next year, even more!

BigCommerce has allowed us to continue to grow and make the changes we need without investing a lot. I reduced my design cost from $3,000 to $4,000 a month when I was only doing $400K to, literally, a couple hundred bucks.

We haven't had to do much to the site since we’ve launched, and that has been incredibly nice.
