The Soundwall success story

Soundwall was founded by two folks very talented in their own right: David Hose and Sven Coppom.

David –– who employees call “the futurist” –– is the former CEO of Rhapsody, which was rebranded as Napster in 2016. He’s had multiple successful startups on the software front - most notably SignalSoft (one of the first companies to pair location with mobile tech).

Sven, on the other hand, is an audio and industrial engineer providing the ingenuity needed to create innovative technologies.

Four years ago, the two of them met and Sven’s home-built flat-panel speaker caught David’s attention. That’s when an engineering feat found marketing expertise.

For the first 2 years, Soundwall was in pure R&D mode. Then, with the final product ready, the team turned to focus on bringing a whole new type of product to market. That’s where BigCommerce came in.


Complex design needs to bring a new product to market

Once we had our product ready, we started really focusing on consumers. One of our founders has a lot of experience in the startup world, and what he and others we’ve spoken to have found is that, in order to really push into a consumer market, it takes quite a bit of resources.

First on that list is a really top-notch ecommerce site which, thanks to BigCommerce, we were able to create easily to really push out our messaging and vision.

In all, working on BigCommerce was a fantastic experience. We utilized a combination of talented internal teams of designers and marketers as well as outside programming from Rizolt Marketing to create a totally unique experience for our customers.

The first goal was to educate the market on the features and benefits of our completely new and innovative product. Smart, flat-panel artwork built on a WiFi connected computing platform is a whole new concept with features that would surprise people… we needed a flexible platform to let us tell the story.

We accomplished this by custom programming informational pages through BigCommerce’s CMS packed with key information and innovative page design features like animated GIFs, embedded videos with pre-roll, full-width high-resolution banner images, scrolling banners, parallax scrolling and much more.

Category pages utilize BigCommerce's advanced filtering feature that's included at no cost in our Enterprise Plan.

We went through dozens of iterations to land the brand’s current design. Our needs have been complex because of the many stakeholders involved. BigCommerce has been able to uniquely adapt to every single one of them.

Early on with BigCommerce, we were able to complete a working website with all the design features a small to medium sized business would need.

Since we are a tech company on the cutting edge of innovation in the iOT space, we found that our website needed to be as well. This involved getting very creative with custom programming and adding features to BigCommerce.

The thing that we really enjoyed the most was BigCommerce's ability to make a very professional website easy for us in the beginning while giving us the flexibility to get very customized as our needs grew.

I think a lot of people will be surprised by just how custom users can make their website. No matter what our needs were, we were able to accomplish it with BigCommerce.

The first site we launched was really just to get it up there. But our redesign was about taking people through a story. This is a completely new product to the market. No one has seen something like this before. We have to turn out site into a storytelling device –– and one that converts!

What we found in the first six months of this redesign is that, yes, we are getting great pickup from consumers, more so than ever before.

Average time spent on site has increased by over 200%. Average pages per session went from 1.25 to 2.5. Bottom line, we saw that site visitors were moving through the site with ease. They were navigating the site to learn more about Soundwall.

Using design to expand to commercial partnerships

That said, the real conversion came from the subsequent inquiries not by individual consumers, but by those in commercial verticals. The big win stemming from this redesign was the ground swell of interest from the hospitality space that lead one of the largest distributors of goods to the hotel industry globally (American Hotel Register) to partner with Soundwall as the newest featured luxury product in their line called The Gallery.

Assisted Living has also become a huge commercial vertical for us. Soundwall works especially well for those memory care issues such as Alzheimer's. There are memory care units that are built to care for people dealing with these challenges. It's proven that visual stimulus and auditory stimulus helps with relaxation and healing - truly making the lives of residents more enjoyable. We get to fill that niche and thanks to our partnership with Coro Health, we have the UC Davis backed research to show how we are improving people's lives through Soundwall’s healing technology.


Affirm consumer financing removes cost barrier at checkout

In general, our goal is to eliminate any barrier to purchase. So, what's the first barrier? Not knowing what something is –– which is why we designed the site the way we did.

What is the second one? Cost.

Soundwalls are not inexpensive items. We hand-make all of these in Colorado. This is just made in Colorado, it has a seal on it, it's made in America, that's important to us.

That being said, they carry a price point that we think is very reasonable for what you're getting. At the same time, not everybody has disposable income to just layout $900 for our Nova or $499 for our Solstice.

We were able to do all of this –– design, integrations, everything –– in 3 weeks. It was unbelievable! It was a lot of work, don't get me wrong, but if you don't have the right tools, you're not doing anything in any amount of time.

What we’ve been able to do and the strong partnerships we are now building both the Hotel and Assisted Living verticals, all of that is really a credit to our marketing team, our designer, our partners and, of course, to BigCommerce for developing an amazing tool that allows that removes any barrier to us building our business the way we want.
