The new year is here, and it’s a natural time for us to reflect on the past year, take some much needed time to recharge and get ready to hit the ground running in 2016.

Since code freeze in mid-November, the Bigcommerce Product and Engineering teams in particular have been reflecting on what we accomplished for our customers in 2015 and identifying opportunities to make you even more successful in 2016.

Here are a few highlights.

Bigcommerce merchants are growing 2x faster than the industry

At Bigcommerce we ultimately measure our success by how successful our merchants are, so we were incredibly proud to hear that a study by Ipsos, a third-party research firm, concluded that stores on the Bigcommerce platform are growing 2x faster than the ecommerce industry average.  Additionally, our own data showed that between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday (the busiest shopping days of the year) Bigcommerce merchants saw 50% YoY growth, with 100% uptime and 25% faster page-response times.

[Tweet “Bigcommerce merchants saw 50% YoY growth, with 100% uptime and 25% faster page-response times.”]

These results were a great validation of the investments we’ve made into our platform thus far, but we’re even more excited to see the results this time next year since so many more features are underway to help our merchants sell more in 2016.

We’re addressing the top-most requested features, with many more on the way

Of course a huge driver of the increased sales our merchants are seeing is due in large part to over 100 new features we launched in 2015.  Thanks to our in-house engineers and our best-in-class partners, we’ve also addressed seven of the top ten most requested features, including:

  • Advanced couponing and discounting abilities
  • Per product shipping options via ShipperHQ
  • Faceted search
  • Shipping and payment methods by customer group via ShipperHQ
  • Dropshipping capabilities via partner integrations
  • Overhauled shipping calculator to include heavy, multiple or oversized boxes via ShipperHQ
  • A single page checkout (now in beta for select merchants)

Several more top requested features are already scheduled for release in the first few months of 2016 –– so stay tuned!

Bigcommerce has partnered with best-in-class technologies and brands

Another driver of the success our merchants witnessed in 2015 are our integrations with the world’s leading companies, including Hubspot, Paypal, Google, Square, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Xero, Intuit, Avalara, ShipperHQ, Sift Science, Alibaba, Salesforce and more.  In many cases, Bigcommerce is one of the only platforms offering these integrations which positions our merchants for significant competitive advantages.

As more Fortune 500 and IR 1000 brands continue to choose Bigcommerce to run their business, we’ll continue to integrate and innovate with leading partners to drive higher sales, save our merchants hundreds of thousands of dollars in maintenance costs and give back countless hours that would have been spent configuring backend technologies.

What’s Next –– 2016 Product Roadmap

We are incredibly excited about 2016. Our teams have finalized the company’s most exciting roadmap yet and we’ve also secured numerous influential partnerships to better tell our merchant stories to the world at large.

One big change we have implemented is a merchant beta program, which if you are Bigcommerce customer, you are invited to join. This program will allow us to test new product implementations with existing customers, ideally those customers for whom the integration will most positively affect. We see this as a move to create a tighter, more secure and more transparent conversation with our customers where their feedback is immediately applied to the products we’re working on.  Here are a few of the betas we are currently filling for 2016:

  • Storefront & Themes
  • Product Management
  • Inventory Management
  • Marketing & Conversion
  • Analytics & Reporting
  • Checkout & Payments
  • Shipping Solutions
  • Accounting
  • POS & Offline Selling
  • Social Media & Social Commerce
  • Marketplace Selling, i.e. Amazon, eBay, Rakuten
  • B2B Features

We’re also looking forward to better integrating our services so that Bigcommerce can effectively serve as a hub for all of your merchandising activities across channels.. Studies show that omnichannel merchants are the fastest growing in the industry –– but there are some very real technical and time-consuming issues that need to be resolved for many businesses to pursue this strategy. So, we’ve inked partnerships with the leading social media platforms (to enable easy, intuitive social commerce capabilities), are working on securing a tighter backend relationship with Square and other POS providers (to better align your brick-and-mortar sales with all your digital activity) and many more partners that we’ll announce in the months ahead.

[Tweet “Stencil is what makes Bigcommerce unique compared to other ecommerce platforms.”]

In early 2016 we’ll also be launching Stencil, which we believe will be the world’s leading design framework for branded storefronts. Early access developers have been blown away by Stencil’s capabilities and we’re also working hand-in-hand with leading development and design partners such as Groove, Pixel Union and Interstellar to demonstrate Stencil’s robust capabilities.

Stencil’s capabilities were best summed up by one of the early partners, “To me, Stencil is what makes Bigcommerce unique compared to other ecommerce platforms. It gives theme developers the flexibility and freedom the industry is desperate for.”

In all, we’re going big in 2016 to make it not only our best year ever, but our merchant’s most impactful year as well. Our goals are to dramatically increase sales for our merchants, innovate with partners to bring our merchants into the future and continue to invest in new features that enable our stores to inspire customer trust and loyalty.

[Tweet “We are your partner in growth & we cannot wait to show you everything planned for the new year.”]

This is the new commerce universe, and Bigcommerce will serve as a gateway to the best partners and software solutions out there. We are your partner in growth. And we cannot wait to show you everything we have planned for the new year.

Until then, have a fabulous holiday and we’ll see you all in 2016.

  • Excellent blog. It is well explained about the Social commerce. That you
shared theory is very informative. Thanks for sharing this post – http://goo.gl/I2hikV

Good bye! I’m off to BigCartel which will better suit my needs.

Also, BigCommerce may have hundreds of themes and templates, but most of them are repeats of each other, and changes were lost or led to misalignment when software changes were introduced.

The new pricing for me – if I stayed – would be 10x what I’m currently charged, and make for a loss on my internet sales.

I guess it is evolution for BigCommerce, and clearly they are not interested in taking smaller long-term customers with them.

  • Vic Bog

Why is one of my comments missing? I also see a few other comments missing. Bigcommerce is deleting comments just like you are deleting posts in the forums and editing your own wikipedia page which is SAD

  • Jim Keating

Let’s see… 1000% increase and a “promise” that new features will be added someday… Sounds like a deal. Let me think about that…

  • Sorry about that. We did not remove the comments intentionally. It was the byproduct of us moving the blog from a sub domain to our primary domain. All comments should appear now though.

They did this because they know they f*cked up. This price hike is going to kill them. I know, because we are leaving them together with tons of others. They are becoming big headed. Believing they are number one and now they are greedy.

PS!!! Advanced couponing and discounting abilities – WHAT!!!!!!! Are you shitting me!!! Really?

Have you tried the templates you sell? No no BC have you REALLY tried them? They do not work!! We have to sit for hours on end fixing it because your lazy designers AND YOU could not be bothered!!

You are like a spouse that started screwing around with someone else. Your leave your partner behind but find the grass is not greener. BC!!! WE AINT COMING BACK!!!

If 2016 is anything like 2015, we are not very excited. Over 100 NEW features? Please list them, I call BS! There are still core bugs and broken or idiotic logic in the platform. Fix all that mess please!!!!

  • KYZYL2

I got notification yesterday that Bigcommerce is increasing our monthly cost by 150%, starting April 1 (how ironic is that?).

We were with them for 3 ½ years, but price gouging always gets my attention. So, I asked our website expert about alternatives, and found out that we can port our store to our WordPress site for about $500, with zero incremental cost afterwards.

We’re dumping Bigcommerce; when enough of us do so they can rename themselves Nocommerce.

  • DWJ

We are now looking at other options for our website. Big Commerce are kidding themselves with all their spin. The decision is not only wrong but it is unethical. We are looking at NETO might as well keep the money in Australia and deal with professionals

  • DWJ

We went BC with our store as another retailer bicycles online used them. We even got the same developers to design our theme. Now I see that bicycles online are listed on NETO as one of their customers – Australian Company not crooks?

  • jssgems

We love BigC and have 3 BigC Websites but BigC require’s you to pay separate monthly fee’s for each domain name. My current fees are around $140 per month for all 3 sites. We paid $8000 to a outside developer to build one of the sites and used BigC templates for the others. We have aggressively added 1000’s of products to 2 of the sites and found fast growing sales on both of them. The fees will now serge 300%-400%-? based on the pricing model explained on BigC. I believe the fees are over the top now considering I have not seen any new tools added to our admin areas. BigC is like putting on a nice looking suit, but ask yourself is it the man or lady who makes the suit or is it the nice looking suit that makes the man. I think that is the question here. We planned to build several new sites but will pull back now.

  • Joanne

I believe that is part of the ShipperHQ integration. So, they’ve basically integrated with a 3rd party and are claiming that it is part of BC. Only Enterprise clients get ShipperHQ included. Everyone else has to pay.

  • thecakestore

I don’t see payments by customer group, per product shipping or drop shipping. Have i got the a different Big Commerce to everyone else?

  • ozcolour

This is a mistake. No business attracts more customers and keeps their existing customers by increasing the base price by 200 to 500%. There are at least 5 other shopping cart programs available in Australia ( and many more overseas) with almost the same features priced at AU$89 to $99 per month. We have started conversations with 3 eCommerce Shopping Cart suppliers in Australia and will select one to use as soon as we can. Big Commerce was developed in Australia and should be careful that they don’t loose most of their existing customers and gain very few new ones with such a ridiculously high price structure.

  • Leslie

I am excited about the improvements, but when the small bugs I ask to be fixed are not addressed, it is hard to be optimistic. It would be a whole lot easier to absorb the huge price increase if everything were running smoothly.

  • EricS49

Massive price hike with only a few weeks notice. Never got any of the “Repeated attempts to contact me”. An alientated customer who is actively exploring moving to a competitor.

  • DWJ

Great so now the plan is that Bigcommerce takes the money back from everyone that has grown their small business by hiking the pricing of the platform up 200% Great business model if you can get away with it.

Immoral business decision you had a flaw in your original pricing and now you are gouging all your loyal customers; then spinning it as a positive, we want to help your business grow by providing better tools BULL! Why not let the small business owners decide for themselves why they want to pay 200% extra for “tools” that are useless. I guarantee that 90-95% of the business owners that are facing the price increase would stick with a $29.95 plan. Why not try that send a message letting everyone either stick with their original plans or migrate?

This new pricing is Bigcommerce telling its customers heads you loose tails I win, the more money you make using our platform, the more money we take.

Then you threaten people on your own forum with account shut down – “Persistent or excessive misconduct may result in a temporary or even permanent suspension of your ability to post. And because these rules can’t cover everything, we also reserve the right to remove any content or suspend your account without prior notice and at our discretion”.

$6720 per year for what is essentially a CMS. It’s absurd! You could pay a person that amount to design a bespoke site from scratch and probably employ an SEO agency to max it’s potential! BC is offering exactly NOTHING for the extra 1000% they are hiking the price to!

  • Vic Bog

None of this warrants a 1000% price increase. Why pay Bigcommerce $600 per month when others offer the same solution for $150

  • Tobias Truman

You definitely should have mentioned your implementation of a massive price increase and your likely 2016 hemorrhaging of merchants seeking relief. All the things you mentioned don’t matter an iota compared to the loss of trust by your merchant base.

  • Tim, you guys are increasing my monthly rate from $80 to $560. This is very difficult for me to accept. Please reconsider the new pricing structure.

Let’s not forget the “exciting” 1000% increase in price for your services

  • Jason

For product management, will you be separating the product uploads by product and variants such as color and sizes? I remember the import file had both properties in the same file under different records that doesn’t make it “usable” for bulk uploads.

  • disqus_2Kd5XIytfe

How are “payment methods by customer group” implemented? I am unable to find this feature.
