How the Open Payment Provider Fee Works
BigCommerce charges a monthly fee on self-service plans (Core, Growth, and Scale) for orders processed through Open Payment Providers. This fee is billed by BigCommerce directly to you, not your shoppers, and appears as a separate line item on your monthly invoice. It’s separate from any fees your payment provider charges.
Fee Rates by Plan
Each order is attributed to the payment provider that processes it. For example, if an Embedded Payment Provider processes the order, no fee applies to that transaction. If all orders are processed through Embedded Payment Providers, your fee is $0.

Fees are calculated using GMV from eligible orders, and BigCommerce uses GMV (gross order value minus 10%) to determine plan thresholds. Starting June 1, you can manage your plan at any time in your account under Account > Upgrade Plan.

Yes, we offer a fully functional 15-day free trial, during which you can test drive BigCommerce and build your site. You don't need a credit card to sign up; there's no obligation and no risk.
Yes, our 15-day free trial is a fully-functional product that would allow you to launch a store and take payments. You will need to set up a payments partner to accept payments and complete transactions.
We’ll send you a reminder to upgrade your store at the end of your free trial. If you choose not to upgrade, we’ll keep your data for 90 days — just choose a subscription plan to get your store up and running again. During this time, your customers won’t be able to access your store, and you’ll only be able to log in to choose a plan. After 90 days, your store will be automatically deleted, and we’ll no longer be able to restore it.
Our Core, Growth, and Scale plans don’t require a contract, and you can cancel at any time in the control panel. If you do, we’ll stop billing you immediately. Contracts are available for BigCommerce’s Performance plan to ensure we’re meeting the level of service that your business needs.
BigCommerce plans are based on your trailing twelve-month (TTM) GMV. As your sales grow and exceed your plan’s threshold (for example, $30K on Core or $100K on Growth), you’ll be notified and automatically upgraded to the next plan to support your growth. On higher tiers like Scale and Performance, there are no abrupt jumps or block charges — instead, a continuous overage rate applies only to orders above your plan’s limit (GMV or orders). This means you can grow without hitting hard limits, while maintaining predictable, incremental costs.
Eligible sales include product price (net of any discounts), as well as taxes and shipping. Social commerce transactions from Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter, and native marketplace integrations (specifically, eBay and Amazon) count as sales/orders. BigCommerce uses GMV, your gross order value after a 10% reduction, to evaluate plan thresholds. Learn more about BigCommerce pricing.
Starting June 1, you can manage your plan directly from your account by going to Account → Upgrade Plan to see your current plan and available options.

How Scale plan pricing works:
Scale plan: Starting at $399/month (or $299/month billed annually) for up to $33,333/month in GMV. 0.9% overage rate applies on GMV above $33,333/month — no tier jumps, no block charges. GMV applies a 10% reduction to gross order value. This number may differ from what you track in your own records. That difference is expected, not an error. Once TTM GMV reaches $2 million, the account will automatically upgrade to Performance.

The processing fee for debit and credit cards begins at 2.89% + $0.29 per transaction for all BigCommerce plans. You will find each plan’s pricing here. Based on your plan, you may be eligible for that plan’s published processing rate. Eligibility requires that you must be a United States-based business. Then,
(1) If you are a new BigCommerce Merchant using a trial PayPal Braintree account, you will need to select a qualifying BigCommerce Plan (Growth, Scale, or Performance). Go into your BigCommerce account Client Area and accept the terms of the selected BigCommerce plan and establish a billing agreement. You will then be charged the first month’s fee for your BigCommerce plan, and you will become eligible to apply for the negotiated payment processing rates with PayPal Braintree. If you are an existing BigCommerce Merchant already in a Growth, Scale, or Performance plan, you do not need to complete this step.
(2) From within the BigCommerce account Control Panel Payment Settings area, complete and submit the PayPal Braintree application to upgrade from a trial to a full account. Additional information may be requested from the PayPal Braintree team during the process of reviewing your application.
(3) 2 to 3 business days following your approval* for a PayPal Braintree account, you will be emailed a Pricing Contract to digitally sign. We suggest adding echosign@echosign.com to your email whitelist to reduce the risk of it going to your spam folder. Follow the instructions in the email on how to sign and return the contract.
(4) Your account will then be updated to reflect the new rate, and you will receive a notification email with the updated rate, which can take up to 10 business days. Your new rate will only apply to transactions after the date on your notification email.
Application for a PayPal Braintree account does not guarantee approval. Periodically, PayPal Braintree reviews its customer accounts to make sure its services and rates fit your account activity. PayPal Braintree reserves the right to revise its fees at any time, subject to a thirty (30) day notice period to you prior to the new fees taking effect.
The standard online rate for payments with American Express is and will continue to be 3.50% with no fixed fee after August 2, 2021.
