From eBay to successful multi-platform ecommerce brand

When Glory Cycles opened for business 15 years ago, the brand was only using the eBay platform to sell bike parts from Europe to cyclists around the globe.

But since then, the brand has evolved and changed with the times. From a stint as a brick and mortar store to today’s BigCommerce operation that includes multiple selling platforms like eBay and soon Amazon, they’ve figured out how to successfully get their high-dollar niche products in front of the right customers.

Their hard work is paying off: They just celebrated their highest revenue month ever alongside 2000%+ YoY sales growth on eBay.

When Yahoo didn’t grow up, Glory Cycles moved to BigCommerce

As told to BigCommerce by Clive De Sousa, President, Glory Cycles.

We generally felt trapped on our Yahoo platform because it just didn't grow up. They just stayed static. We needed a site and platform that could scale up alongside us, and Yahoo wasn’t doing it.

So we started searching. As a smaller company without a dedicated IT team, we were fairly DIY in our approach. One of the things we noticed was that some of the platforms we looked at were just too costly for us.

After searching for quite a while, we decided to first test one of our sister ecommerce sites on BigCommerce. We quickly figured out how to use it and then switched Glory Cycles to the BigCommerce platform as well.

The price was good and the transition was easy, so those were two of the major things that brought us here. Now it’s been three years, and we just closed our best month in 15 years of business.

Leveraging the eBay integration to move returned products

As told to BigCommerce by Clive De Sousa, President, Glory Cycles.

Today we don’t put a lot of energy into our eBay efforts, but we do use it to sell our returns. The reason for that is we’re a bit limited in what our vendors allow us to sell on that platform, so it’s primarily a channel for moving returned product.

It’s extremely simple with the BigCommerce integration.

For a long time, we shied away from doing a lot of eBay business because we didn’t want to run two separate systems, but with BigCommerce we can run everything from a single location. When we get an eBay order, it still comes through as a normal order in BigCommerce, and that was very attractive to us.

That said, I know the greatest benefit comes when you’re disciplined with your time and use the right tools to make that happen. Clive De Sousa, President, Glory Cycles

Webgility integration for management of inventory and POs

As told to BigCommerce by Clive De Sousa, President, Glory Cycles.

Our products are pretty complex. We sell custom cycles, so when an order comes in, it has to be built out by our team. Right now, we use a couple of integrated tools to manage that entire process.

The customer originally places an order, and then our team gets an update in which it actually has the SKU for each part and a line item for each part.

From there, we use QuickBooks to manage the inventory and my buyer takes that QuickBooks sales order and creates the purchase order. We use Webgility to export that data between BigCommerce and QuickBooks.

Without a system like this, order tracking and inventory management would be a nightmare for us.

Let smart tools build better time management

As told to BigCommerce by Clive De Sousa, President, Glory Cycles.

When it comes to ecommerce, it’s all about time management and keeping a real portion of your mind open to the technical side of of things (which for me, is a problem sometimes.)

That said, I know the greatest benefit comes when you’re disciplined with your time and use the right tools to make that happen.
