From platform risk to business resilience

WNC CBD is a hemp company based in Asheville, North Carolina, selling THC-compliant products both direct-to-consumer and wholesale to dispensaries in 48 states.

In May 2023, their growth came to a sudden halt. After being deplatformed without warning due to shifting THC rules, WNC CBD’s ecommerce site went dark — and with it, their ability to sell.

What followed was an all-hands sprint to find a platform that could support high-risk products, a large and growing catalog, and the need for rapid growth.

But it couldn’t be just any platform. It had to be fast, scalable, and flexible enough to power both retail and wholesale operations. Thankfully, they found BigCommerce.

CHALLENGE

A sudden scramble to stay online. 

As a hemp brand operating in a constantly changing market, WNC CBD had always been careful about compliance. But when Shopify introduced a new 1% total THC threshold, the platform deemed them too high-risk to continue, and removed the majority of their products without warning.

“We’re a high-risk brand, and unfortunately, Shopify was not willing to continue with us as a cannabis brand,” said Sav Jack, Technical Operations Manager at WNC CBD.

The urgency was real: with the site down, their direct-to-consumer business effectively paused. Every day offline meant missed orders and loss of momentum at a critical time in their growth.

On top of compliance support, they needed a platform that could:

  • Handle a large and complex catalog of 400+ SKUs

  • Provide a modern, scalable DTC storefront

  • Power a self-serve wholesale experience for B2B customers

There was no time for a long onboarding cycle or a team of outside developers. WNC CBD needed a platform that could go live fast and scale with them as they grew.

SOLUTION

Getting back online in two weeks. 

With sales on pause and no time to spare, WNC CBD turned to BigCommerce on the recommendation of a peer already using the platform.

“We quickly made the transition to BigCommerce, and we were able to get up and rolling within two weeks,” said Sav. “It was really critical — for us, our business, and our staff — to get back online as quickly as possible.”

BigCommerce’s flexibility, clear documentation, and responsive support team helped make it happen. In just two weeks, WNC CBD restored its ecommerce presence and laid the foundation for long-term growth.

Launching a self-service B2B experience. 

Before BigCommerce, WNC CBD’s wholesale operation was entirely manual. Orders came through calls, emails, or one-on-one conversations with the CEO or sales team, with no online storefront to support scale.

That changed in December 2024, when the team launched on BigCommerce B2B Edition.

“We had been doing B2B for five years, but it was very hands-on,” shared Sav. “We didn’t have a storefront.”

With B2B Edition, dispensary partners can now browse the catalog, build orders, and check out online — no phone call required.

“Our CEO and sales team probably got 50% of their time back,” remarked Sav. “Now, dispensaries can just go in, see what they want, and order like they would on any other site.”

Integrating the tools that power growth. 

With BigCommerce as their foundation, WNC CBD built out a tech stack that enhances the customer experience and reduces manual effort — a major win for a small team managing both retail and wholesale.

SiteVibes powers product reviews and a rewards program that helps customers navigate the brand’s extensive catalog. 

“We use SiteVibes for reviews, and that’s been a great tool to get customers more engaged,” said Sav.

For marketing, the team relies on Klaviyo to support behavior-based email flows across both sides of the business. Even without a full-time marketer, WNC CBD is able to segment communications and drive conversion with targeted messaging.

To reduce operational overhead, WNC CBD uses Signifyd to automate fraud prevention and chargeback management, replacing what used to be a time-consuming, manual in-house process.

On the logistics side, ShipperHQ delivers real-time rates and fulfillment logic, while helping WNC CBD stay compliant in a regulated industry. 

“There are certain states that we aren’t able to ship to unfortunately, so ShipperHQ has made that really easy to implement when needed,” shared Sav.

“We quickly made the transition to BigCommerce, and we were able to get up and rolling within two weeks.”

Success across the board.

Since launching on BigCommerce, WNC CBD has grown both its retail and wholesale operations, while reducing the day-to-day workload on its internal team.

“In our first year with BigCommerce, our DTC side grew 19%. And then since December of 2024, when we launched B2B, we've gained over 200 new wholesale clients,” remarked Sav.

With both storefronts running on a single platform, the team has seen measurable improvements across the business. 

Other key wins include 50% time savings for the CEO and sales team thanks to self-serve wholesale ordering, and ongoing feedback and engagement from wholesale customers using the site.

BigCommerce has helped WNC CBD stabilize operations, scale efficiently, and create a better experience for customers on both sides of the business.

Continuing to scale and evolve the online experience. 

With both storefronts stable and growing, WNC CBD is focused on refining the customer experience and scaling smarter.

One priority is implementing Makeswift to give the team more flexibility in visual content management. 

“We’re really excited to start using Makeswift, and think it will really improve our team efficiency,” shared Sav.

They’re also continuing to improve the B2B storefront based on feedback from dispensary partners, while investing in segmentation, automation, and deeper personalization across the retail experience.
