For more than 120 years, Mizuno has earned the trust of athletes by designing products built for performance. But as customer expectations evolved, the brand recognized its digital experience needed to move just as fast as the people it serves.
To support future growth, Mizuno USA reimagined its ecommerce foundation with a composable architecture built around BigCommerce and implemented by Mira Commerce. The new platform gives the team the speed, flexibility, and control to launch content faster, unify operations across the US and Canada, and deliver a more seamless shopping experience.
By 2024, Mizuno USA had reached a turning point. Years of investment had expanded the brand's direct-to-consumer business, but its legacy monolithic ecommerce platform was becoming an obstacle to future growth rather than an enabler. The architecture was expensive to maintain, difficult to update, and lacked the flexibility needed to support the next generation of digital experiences.
For the marketing team, one of the biggest frustrations was speed. Publishing new content, product launches, and seasonal campaigns often took days or weeks, making it difficult to react to changing consumer demand. At the same time, managing distinct strategies for the US and Canadian storefronts added operational complexity, limiting the team's ability to tailor experiences for each market while maintaining consistent data and processes.
Rather than simply replacing one ecommerce platform with another, Mizuno set out to build a foundation for long-term innovation.
The team established four guiding principles to evaluate its next platform: agility to move at the pace of the market, autonomy to support localized strategies across multiple storefronts, stronger return on investment by replacing temporary workarounds with lasting solutions, and strategic partnerships with technology providers that understood Mizuno's long-term vision. Those priorities ultimately shaped the company's decision to modernize its architecture with BigCommerce and Mira Commerce.
Mizuno USA didn't want to trade one monolithic headache for another, so they partnered with Mira Commerce to design a composable architecture built for long-term flexibility. After evaluating several leading ecommerce platforms, the team selected BigCommerce for its cloud reliability, performance, and robust API framework, allowing them to connect best-in-class technologies while creating a foundation that could evolve alongside the business.
“We weren't just looking for vendors. We were looking for partners that understood our missions, our values, and our goals and could help us pave the way to meet those objectives. Fortunately, we found that in BigCommerce and Mira Commerce,” Rodriguez explained.
By adopting a modular architecture, Mizuno gained the flexibility to continuously improve its digital experience without being constrained by its underlying platform. Instead of investing in short-term workarounds, the team could focus on delivering new customer experiences and scaling for future innovation.
One of Mizuno's highest priorities was giving its marketing team greater control over the customer experience. To accomplish this, the company implemented ContentStack as its headless CMS, dramatically accelerating content creation and publishing.
Marketing teams that previously waited days or weeks to launch campaigns can now publish new landing pages, product drops, and seasonal promotions in just hours. The platform also enables Mizuno to deliver consistent yet localized experiences across its US and Canadian storefronts while managing content from a centralized system.
The new architecture shifted valuable time away from manual content management and toward creating richer customer experiences, allowing the business to respond more quickly to changing consumer demand.
Beyond content management, Mizuno modernized the entire purchase experience by integrating specialized ecommerce technologies through BigCommerce's open architecture.
Deck Commerce provides real-time inventory visibility across multiple locations, ensuring inventory remains accurate throughout the shopping journey and helping eliminate overselling during high-demand product launches.
At checkout, Bolt's one-click checkout experience reduced checkout time by 90%, creating a faster and more seamless purchase experience for customers. Mira Commerce also developed custom middleware and integrations that unified inventory, order management, and ecommerce operations across the business.
Rather than implementing technology for technology's sake, every component of the composable stack was selected to remove friction, improve operational efficiency, and create a stronger foundation for continued digital innovation.

Mizuno's composable transformation delivered measurable improvements across both customer experience and business performance. By replacing a rigid legacy platform with a flexible, API-first architecture, the team gained the confidence to pursue growth initiatives without worrying about operational limitations.
“We chose BigCommerce for a few reasons. One is the reliability of the cloud and then the strong performance and robust APIs that enabled us to add more components and integrate that with the shopping cart,” Rodriguez shared.
The results speak for themselves:
Organic search traffic increased by 33%
Direct traffic grew by nearly 60%
Checkout time decreased by 90%
Behind the scenes, the new architecture enabled Mizuno to handle increased demand without creating additional operational complexity, letting teams focus on delivering better customer experiences instead of managing technical workarounds.
The customer experience also became significantly faster. Bolt's one-click checkout reduced checkout time by 90%, removing friction from one of the most important moments in the purchase journey. Combined with real-time inventory visibility and faster content publishing, Mizuno created a more responsive shopping experience while strengthening internal efficiency.
“What we've started to do is remove friction from top to bottom of the sales funnel and merge content and commerce seamlessly so that the consumer has a unified experience with our brand,” Rodriquez shared.
Instead of simply modernizing its technology stack, Mizuno built a digital foundation that allows the business to move faster, adapt to changing consumer expectations, and continue investing in growth with confidence.
“We're seeing impressive growth across all of these metrics, which has really been a game changer for our business.”

As Mizuno looks ahead, the company is focused on creating consistent experiences across every channel while preparing for the growing influence of AI-driven discovery.
“We know that data is really going to become our brand, and that's going to be the foundation,” said Rodriguez.
The company is investing in a modular, composable architecture that allows it to deliver consistent product and customer data wherever shoppers engage with the brand.
At the same time, Mizuno remains committed to balancing technology with authentic human connection.
“We've been making products for 120 years, made by people for people, athlete to athlete. That's at our core values,” Rodriguez shared.
Through it all, the fundamentals still matter most. As Ostapenko put it, the smartest AI investment in the world is wasted if a customer orders a blue shoe and receives a yellow one. The Mizuno team believes the company’s strong composable foundation — and the people — will remain the biggest growth drivers into the future.
“AI is probably going to change the way that we design our strategy, but it won't become our entire strategy. We're going to look for opportunities to intercept artificial intelligence with human intelligence to make sure we're delivering a genuine and authentic experience for our consumers,” Rodriguez shared.
